The Pets for Seniors Program is administered by the Dona Ana County Humane Society.
The most serious disease for older people is not cancer or heart disease – it’s loneliness. Pets offer affection, unconditional love, fight loneliness and can help ease the loss of a loved one. To apply for a voucher, download an application here or pick one up at the Dona Ana County Humane Society at 2405 W. Picacho Ave., Suite 103 in Las Cruces (the same office as the Spay and Neuter Action Program.), 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Applicants who are approved receive a voucher worth $50 off the adoption fee, which is $75 for dogs and $50 for cats at the ASCMV. The adoption fee includes the first set of vaccinations, microchip and spay/neuter surgery.
The voucher is also worth $50 off at Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary, where adoption fees are $50 for cats, $75 for kittens 6 months old or younger, and $85 for dogs. Age-appropriate shots and spay/neuter surgery are included.
Local service dog trainer Judith Tudor is also offering free dog training for anyone who adopts a dog through Pets for Seniors.
Please note that the application asks for details about pets you have owned in the past and what happened to them. We reserve the right to reject applications based on those answers. We want to place shelter pets in forever homes where they will be humanely treated. We do not give vouchers to people who plan to chain their dogs or plan to dock their ears or tails, nor do we give vouchers to people who plan to declaw their adopted cat.
